Preseli Bluestone

Preseli “Bluestone”

Preseli Spotted Dolerite is a slightly altered igneous rock with a distinctive pattern – patches of Plagioclase feldspar are found in a fine grained blue-green matrix.

Preseli Spotted Dolerite is one of the Bluestone rock types used in the stone age monument of Stonehenge, 120 miles from the source area of the Preseli Hills of Pembrokeshire, Wales.

There is still debate if ancient people transported the stones themselves, or if they used stones transported by glaciation. However, recently identified stoneage quarries on the north facing slope of the Preseli’s adds weight to the the human transport theory.

With the original sites being protected, our bluestone is sourced from boulders transported onto private land by glacier and stream action.
